Golden by Pania-of-the-Reef Golden by Pania-of-the-Reef
This weekend, I had the pleasure to visit the ancient gold mines of Las Medulas in Spain. The Romans "injected" water into the mountainside in great amounts in order to extract gold. Over time, the water canals that the Romans constructed began to literally "eat away" at the mountainside, thus creating geological forms like the ones in this photograph. It really is quite a bizarre alien landscape.

~No this photograph was not saturated. The rocks really are that red! If you go walking in the caves, your shoes become covered in a thick layer of orange dust.~

I give :iconspain-photography: permission to display my work.

OMG this is just fantastic! Almost looks like a painting! I like how you managed to shoot this with the perfect lighting, and the perspective provided by the rock on the right makes it even more interesting. I am suggesting it for a DD :)

Thank you so very much for the sweet comment; it really made my day. It was truly a perfect day when I visited here, and the sun was shining directly onto the rocks making the whole landscape glow. Lol, I have to admit that the photograph actually "hurts" my eyes. This is still one of my favorite places to visit in Spain.
Thank you so much for actually thinking of suggesting it this photograph as DD. It is so not worthy of one though in my opinion as nature did the majority of the work, but I am extremely glad that like this photograph!

It would worth nothing if nature did all the work and a photographer couldn't capture! :w00t:

Lol, I guess what I ment to say is that I feel as though the landscape is so beautiful that I didn't sufficiently capture it. I have a great deal to learn about photography (it is just a hobby that started as a way to document my life in Spain, but it is quickly becoming more)...

Oh, the colors! Nothing like this in Wisconsin.I first assumed the rocks were sandstone until I read your comments. Orange dust? You mean like Cheetos residue on one's fingers?

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment! It really does look like something out of an alien world- the colours are so incredible when the sun comes out! I wish that I could visit here now, because I am sure that a great deal of snow has fallen. Unfortunately, the main highway to get there is probably closed. I am definitely going back in the spring. ^_^

Well done! Perhaps cropping off a small portion of the upper sky would improve the picture, maybe? Just a suggestion. It might work, and it might not. Love it as it is, though. :)

The bizarre part is the foliage mixed in. I've only ever seen these kinds of rock formations in very dry climates.
