I posted another photograph of this tiny invertebrate that I found perched upon a small cone flower. At first I thought that it was a species of hummingbird moth, but I am not one hundred percent sure. I would greatly appreciate if any nature photographer or naturalist could tell me. It really was a beautiful insect that I haven't seen again.
~Comments and constructive criticism are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for looking.~
Thank you so much for telling me. I thought that it was absolutely beautiful as well. I just recently had another user tell me that it is definitely not a hummingbird. I am still searching online for what species of moth is could possibly be. It flew into my garden one day and was literally there for an hour. I snapped some photographs of it, and tried to capture it in detail as best as I could. I went out and searched for it the next day, and I didn't see it again.
in one word -sometimes we have "bad luck" I have the same with plume moths, common in Poland. After this shot [link] I've been searching for them again with my camera (several times) to try another close-ups, but havent seen any. But when I've been at the same place with my dog (and without camera) -there were some of them, flying or sitting. Arrrrrrgh!
Your beautiful visitor is similar to Scarlet Tiger moth (Callimorpha dominula, formerly Panaxia dominula) [link] -but has different back wings (scarlets have red, sometimes yellow background with dark dots). Maybe it's a mixture of two species -who knows? I'm not a specialist
